Trigger Point Massage
Trigger Point Massage is a form of remedial massage therapy in which direct pressure is applied to specified points on tender muscle tissue to bring about reduction in muscle tension and pain relief.
What are Trigger Points?
Trigger points, or a type of muscle stiffness commonly referred to as “knots”, are the result of tiny contractions that develop in muscle tissue when an area of the body is injured or overworked. A hallmark of a trigger point is something called “referred” pain. This means that trigger points typically send their pain to some other place in the body, which is why conventional treatments for the area where the pain is felt may be not effective.
What Activates a Trigger Point?
Every muscle has potential trigger points which can become activated by muscle overuse, inflammation, trauma (eg. from sports and work related injuries, falls and car accidents, poor posture, etc…), electrolyte imbalances, infections, chronic stress, muscle strain from repetitive movements, nerve pain, emotional stress, anxiety, allergies, nutritional deficiencies, or part of the inflammatory response from toxins in the environment. These trigger points can cause severe pain in the affected muscle, or refer pain, and thus be felt in another area of the body. Other trigger points are only felt when the muscle is directly palpated by the therapist. A single event can initiate a trigger point, and you can suffer the effects for the rest of your life if that trigger point is not addressed properly.
What Factors contribute to Trigger Points?
Once a trigger point has developed it can become self perpetuating and persist until it is fully released. Many factors can contribute to the formation of trigger points. These include: emotional stress and tension, postural strain, trauma, fatigue, sleep deprivation, prolonged immobility, infections and mineral deficiencies.
How Can Trigger Point Massage Helps
Trigger Point Massage therapy is for almost everyone. Muscles with active trigger points are always weaker than normal muscles and unable to move through their full range of motion. Often because they are unable to perform their normal function, other muscles are recruited to perform the activity of the compromised muscle. These secondary muscles can go on to develop trigger points themselves if the original muscle is not treated.
Trigger point therapy involves sustained pressure on the area for a set period of time, and doing this on a regular basis. As the pressure is applied the trigger point releases allowing the release of tension, improved blood flow and improved flexibility in the area.
The taut bands of muscle that accompany trigger points are often easily identified on palpation and pain can quickly be minimized with sustained compression on the affected tissue for 30 to 90 seconds. Some discomfort may be experienced when the compression is applied but the therapist will position the muscle to minimize the discomfort until such time it subsides completely. You will usually receive home exercises to perform to assist with the restoration of function.

"I was having issues with my back and shoulder blades for almost for a year or so. I tried everything that the doctors suggested but it was just managing the pain with no long term relief. I noticed this website and contacted Lauren. First thing I noticed was her caring manner, she listened to my problem and gave me her first available appointment slot. As soon as I stepped into her studio I knew that this place is managed by a professional practitioner.
I was welcomed with a bright and friendly smile. Lauren asked me questions about my back problem and gave me options for treatment. During the session Lauren explained to me as what was going on during the massage. At the end of the session Lauren offered me her advice as to how many sessions I needed. I have seen Lauren twice so far in last one month and my shoulders have much better range of movement and my back is feeling better now. I highly recommend every reader to give it a try and see for yourself."
